Description:

This style of rifle was widely manufactured in the German states in the mid-18th century and was also produced by some immigrants in the American colonies. It has raised rococo carving throughout the stock and a small flourish of rococo style engraving at the tail of the lock. There are no visible markings. The swamped barrel has traditional German rifling and is equipped with a dovetailed brass blade front sight and a notch rear sight with fancy base and an express style folding leaf. The underside of the patch box lid is marked "1864/G. SIEGERT/EASTON/1864 MARCH 13th PA" and "1864." The marking appears to be in correct period hand and ink. Other Civil War era items including an accordion are also marked with G. Siegert and Easton, PA., markings. "Illustrious Grand Mason" George S. Siegert was a recorder for the Grand Council of Pennsylvania and lived at #9 South Eleventh Street in Easton.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron surfaces display dark brown patina and have some oxidation and pitting especially near the breech. The barrel also has some tool marks including vice marks behind the rear sight. The brass has an aged patina throughout. The stock is fair as repaired and refinished. It has been spliced from the front of the ramrod entry pipe forward. There is also some cracking and a chip ahead of the lock and chipping at the toe. The carving remains crisp. The lock functions fine. The markings inside the patch box are easily legible.
