Description:

This piece may have been constructed in New England and has Dutch influence in the side plate and overall construction. It has no visible maker's marks but has fine floral engraving on the buttplate tang and trigger guard bow, and attractive scroll designs on the side plate, thumb plate, and trigger guard finial. The three stage barrel is part octagon and has two "wedding band" transitions and a small blade front sight. The barrel tang is grooved as a rear sight.

Rating Definition:

Fair as reconverted to flintlock configuration and altered. The barrel and lock plate have dark brown patina, extensive mild pitting on the barrel, and moderate pitting and oxidation concentrated at the breech and on the cock. The brass components have an aged patina. The stock has been cut and spliced at the ramrod entry pipe and has brass joints. The forend is pinned whereas the barrel is held by two wedges. There is also come chipping at the toe. The lock needs work. The engraving patterns are crisp.
