This coach length double barrel is inscribed "Wells, Fargo & Co. 109" on the rib ahead of "C G BONEHILL LONDON LAMINATED STEEL." The side plates are also inscribed "C G BONEHILL/LONDON and have somewhat crude English engraving. The underside of the barrels has various proofmarks including "NOT FOR BALL" on each barrel indicating they were choked prior to when they were proofed. The chokes gauge at near improved modified and improved cylinder, and the chambers measure 2 3/4 inches. The water table is marked with additional proofs and a 1877 patent. The forearm, water table, and lower tang have the matching serial number, and the barrel rib and rear of the forearm hardware are stamped "023." This style of shotgun was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Their short barrels made them more maneuverable on stagecoaches where they filled the same defensive role previously covered by blunderbusses. Wells, Fargo & Co. agents were known to have purchased shotguns, revolvers, and carbines by various manufacturers for defending their coaches and rail cars. They simply purchased whatever was available at the local hardware store and may have had them inscribed by a local jeweler or similar artisan. There was no standardization of the company's weapons or their markings through the Old West era.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrels were cut down to coach length during the period, and the forend and forend barb on the barrel have been crudely repaired with wood putty more recently. There are traces of original case colors and otherwise smooth gray and brown patina throughout. The barrels retain attractive Damascus twist patterns. The wood has partially smoothed checkering, some chipping along the edges of the forend, light scratches and dings, and some minor hairline cracks at the junction with the rear of the action. The locks function fine, and the markings are mostly crisp.
