Description:

This example was manufactured in 1891. Only the first 15,552 of the almost 750,000 Winchester Model 1890s were manufactured with a solid frame. German silver blade front sight and a fixed rear sight on the 24 3/8 inch octagon barrel with the first style markings of "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN.CONN.U.S.A.-" on the top center of the barrel. The caliber "22 SHORT" is stamped at the breech end of the barrel. This example does not have the Winchester "W/P" proofmarks that were introduced in 1905. Mounted on a 12 groove round walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a curved steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Traces of the original blue finish remains, mostly on the breechbolt, with the balance aged to a brown patina with some mild edge wear, small dings, light scattered pitting, clear barrel inscription, and handling marks. The frame has aged to a mottled gray patina with handling marks and mostly clear markings. The wood is also very good as refinished with small indentations throughout, handling marks, slight gaps around the tangs, and a roughly carved "HEW" on the belly of the stock. Mechanically excellent.
