Description:

The Remington Autoloading Rifle was first manufactured in 1906 and became the Model 8 in 1911. It was slightly redesigned/improved and rebranded as the Model 81 in 1936. The design is based on John Moses Browning's October 16, 1900, patent and was also produced by Fabrique Nationale as the Model 1900. Only 26,000 rifles were manufactured before the designation was changed to the Model 8. They proved very popular with American sportsmen and were also widely used by police departments. Some police guns were altered to use higher capacity magazines to give police enough firepower to fight the infamous gangs of the day. This example dates to early 1907 is stamped "UP" on the left side of the forearm suggesting it was used by the Union Pacific's railway police or "Railway Bulls" to provide security. The trains were still such significant targets for outlaws in the 1920s that rail cars were defended by both privately employed railway police and U.S. Marines. This rifle has a dovetailed blade front sight, adjustable 1902 patented sporting rear sight, the two-line address and patent marking on the top of the barrel "30-30" marked at the breech, circled "J" stamps on the bottom of the frame and trigger guard, an "S" below the serial number, and a "REMINGTON/ARMS CO." embossed checkered hard rubber buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 95% plus of the original blue finish remains. There is a group of small strike marks on the left side of the barrel, a scattered scratches, some slight spotting, and general handling and storage marks. The front sight blade is bent to the right. The wood is fine and has minor edge wear and several minor surface abrasions. It is mechanically excellent and has crisp markings.
