Description:

The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. manufactured an estimated 1,200 Navy Pistols with 6 inch barrel between 1855 and 1857. The top barrel flat is marked with the three line Volcanic Repeating Arms Company address. The serial number is marked on the right side of the lever, and the matching number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip panel over a stamped out "1000". The marking was probably a factory error because the over stamp on the "1000" is the zero turned sideways and the corrected number is stamped with the same die. The inside of the grip panels are un-numbered. This pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine, and lever with round finger hole. The barrel/magazine had a blue finish. The hammer and lever were casehardened. The pistol has a brass pinched front sight on the barrel and a dovetail mounted fixed rear sight on the receiver. Fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and magazine have a mottled gray patina with some pitting and minor oxidation concentrated mainly on the left side. The lever has a smooth gray patina, and the hammer has a smooth dark patina. The very good receiver has an untouched dark aged patina. The grips are also fair with nicks and chips along the bottom edges, a small gouge on the upper right panel, and overall minor dents, dings and scratches. Part of the top two lines of the address are fading but legible. Mechanically functions fine.
