Description:

This rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum that describes it as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 45/90, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 32 inches, Trigger: Set, Checkered stock, Pistol grip, Stock: 14., Drop: 3-1/4 in., Sights: Lyman front and Freund rear - Rear sight 25-3/4 in. from muzzle" and "Shotgun butt". The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on November 26, 1889. The octagon barrel, full length magazine, bolt, loading gate, trigger and steel shotgun buttplate have a blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever are color casehardened. The forearm and special length pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with factory "Style H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The 32-inch, octagon barrel has two magazine bands and has a Lyman "Jack" front sight with white bead. The rare, special order, Freund folding leaf rear sight is mounted 25 3/4 inches from the muzzle. The rear sight leaf is graduated to 1000 yards ("10") and has diamond shaped and u-shaped apertures on the rear sight and elevator bar. The top of the folding leaf is stamped: "FREUND'S/PATENT/1876". The receiver is fitted with a single set trigger. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "45-90 W.C.F." is located on the top barrel flat immediately in front of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "- MODEL 1886-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are located on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number "36884" is stamped in script numerals behind the tang screws. Winchester Model 1886 rifles with extra long barrels are very rare.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This rifle is all original and retains more than 95% of the blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine retain nearly all of the blue finish with sharp markings. Wear is limited to a barely noticeable scratch on the upper left barrel flat. The special order Freund rear sight has about 90% of the fire blue finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the bolt, loading gate, trigger and shotgun buttplate. The receiver, forearm cap, hammer, and lever have fiery case colors that show almost no wear and have not faded. The excellent fancy, highly figured stock and forearm retain more than 95% of the high polish piano finish. The fine checkering is sharp. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very insignificant storage marks. This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle. The combination of the special order extra long barrel and special order sights, set trigger and custom stock dimensions make this rifle unique. This rare, high condition Model 1886 rifle would be the stand-out piece in the finest collection of Winchester firearms. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
