Manufactured in 1897. Dovetailed blade front sight and adjustable buckhorn rear sight. The two-line address is marked on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight, and "45-90 W.C.F." is at the breech. The receiver, forend cap, buttplate and lever are casehardened. Winchester discontinued the use of casehardened frames in 1901. The barrel, full length tubular magazine, bolt and trigger are blue. 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number are marked on the lower tang, and the upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-". Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with a steel forend cap and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office sheet which verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on May 7, 1897, and shipped to order number 159375 on September 11, 1897.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 80% of the original blue finish with some thinning, edge wear, some light spotting and several scratches. The bolt retains 98% original blue finish. 60% plus of the vivid original case colors remain on the receiver, hammer and lever. The forend cap has a smooth dark patina, and the buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is fine and shows some scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
