The Gibbs carbine is one of the scarcest carbines used by Union forces during the Civil War. Only 1,052 Gibbs carbines were manufactured by William F. Brooks of New York City and delivered to the U.S. government in 1863. Around 500 of these were issued to the 10th Missouri Cavalry and smaller quantities were issued to the 13th and 14th New York Cavalry. Though the design is superior to many weapons used during the war and was patented nearly a decade before the war ended, production was hampered by manufacturing delays, the loss of a factory to fire, and Ordnance Department preferences prior to the war for other designs. This example is missing some of the markings often found on these carbines such as the eagle behind the hammer and a year on the lock plate as has been seen on some examples. The lock plate has "Wm. F. BROOKS/MANFR NEW YORK" stamped in front of the hammer. The top of the receiver is marked "L.H. GIBBS/PAT'D/JAN Y 8, 1856" at the breech. It features a blade front sight and a three leaf rear sight graduated out to 500 yards. The stock has a sling bar with ring mounted on the left side and unmarked buttplate. There are some small inspection marks.

Very good. The metal displays mottled gray and brown patina, oxidation and light pitting. The stock has some dings, minor scratches, and small dings. The markings are mostly clear. Mechanically fine.
