Exceptional Officers Presentation Grade Civil War Burnside Fifth Model Breech Loading Percussion Carbine

This carbine was manufactured circa 1863 and has the early style "BURNSIDE'S PATENT/MODEL OF 1864" on the frame at the breech, "STEEL 1864" on the top of the barrel, and "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co/PROVIDENCE R.I." on the lock plate. The barrel has pinched blade front and folding leaf rear sights. The action has the 5th Model guide screw on the right. It is mounted with a smooth highly figured burl walnut forearm and straight wrist stock with piano varnish, standard buttplate and the rarely seen pewter forend cap used on presentation carbines. There are single letter inspection marks on most of the components and matching serial numbers on the barrel, frame, breechblock, and inside of the lock (partial).

ConditionExcellent. The barrel retains 90% of the lightly thinned original blue finish on the barrel and the royal blue on the breechblock and lever. 75% plus of the original case colors remain with a brown patina forming along with some light oxidation. The exceptional highly figured walnut stock and forend are both excellent with some light scratches and dings. The action is excellent and the markings are mostly crisp.
