Description:

Operating in Richmond, Virginia, Boyle & Gamble was one of the great sword making firms of the Confederacy, with the Staff & Field pattern standing as one of the signature Confederate edged weapons. Overall length is 35 inches, with a 29 7/8 inch single fuller blade decorated on both sides with floral and vine pattern etching, with a Grecian helmet on the right side and a set of crossed cannons over "C.S.A." on the left. The hilt is cast brass, with the guard decorated with a series of pierced through designs, including the signature "CS" in a laurel wreath topped with a star and the cast ear of corn where the branch meets the knuckle guard, a helmet pommel with laurel designs, a flat-sided rear quillion and a leather grip with six turns of single strand wire. The number "40604" has been added to the grip in black and yellow paint, possibly a collection or museum inventory number.

Rating Definition:

Good overall. The blade shows a mixed bright gray patina a nick in the edge a few inches down from the tip, mild spotting, and some cracks on the right side at the top of the ricasso. The hilt is very good with some mild scuffs and stains on the leather, a dark aged patina on the brass, and light handling marks.
