This Model 1879 has been modified to a sporting rifle by R. Binger and features a U-notch sporting rear sight and a large blade front sight along with a two click tumbler and serrated trigger. The octagon barrel is marked "45 GOVT" on top and "R. BINGER" on the left at the breech. The breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873", and the lock plate is marked with the eagle motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer and "R&B/Co" at the rear. It has a walnut half-stock with checkered wrist and ebony forend insert.

Rating Definition:

Very good as custom modified and restored. The rifle has mostly an even brown finish with lightly textured surface on the barrel, nearly all of the vivid refinished case colors on the lock and breechblock door, most of the case colors cleaned off of the breechblock, and 75% of the blue finish on the trigger guard and lower tang. The buttplate has brown patina with some scrapes and pitting. There are some light scratches and edge wear overall. The wood is very good with a small piece added on the right side of the forend (likely to fill where a barrel band spring had been) and a few small dings and scrapes throughout. The checkering remains very crisp and has a nice, smooth oil finish. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.
