Description:

This rifle is marked "UNION/RIFLE WORKS" in an oval around two crossed branches below the bolster and the floral pattern lock and has a fish head style hammer, floral and line engraving on the patch box which has five pierced spots, additional simple engraving on the twelve silver inlays, double set triggers, standard "Kentucky" style sights (rear sight base stamped "30"), and full length stock. The Union Rifle Works was active in the late 1850s and early 1860s in Lancaster and Philadelphia. The inlays and basic style resemble other Philadelphia built guns designed primarily for the western trade.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and lock have gray and brown patina as well as some mild oxidation and pitting. The brass and silver have aged patinas. The stock has some subtle false striping, various minor scrapes and dings, chip under the lock and at the breech, and the common crack on the left flat. The lock and trigger mechanisms need some tuning. The markings and engraving patterns are mostly crisp.
