This revolver is engraved and according to the inscription on the left side plate, was presented to Louis M. Logan by the Smith & Wesson factory although factory does not confirm. The inscription reads, "PRESENTED TO/LOUIS M. LOGAN/SEPT. 29 93/BY/SMITH & WESSON ARMS COL. U.SA." S&W records do not indicate that the revolver was a factory presentation piece. At the time of this writing, Louis M. Logan has not been identified. One possibility is Louis M. Logan who lived from 1851-1934 and is buried at the Lewistown City Cemetery in Lewistown, Montana; however, no other details could be ascertained. Some have speculated that Louis M. Logan references the bother of western outlaw and Wild Bunch gang member Harvey "Kid Curry" Logan, Lonnie Logan. In the 8 November 1901 edition, Lonnie, also an outlaw, is referred to as "Louis Logan, alias 'Louis Curry,' alias 'Lonny Curry.'" However, Lonnie's middle name was Dow. The sides of the barrel have engraved scrollwork at the breech. The rear of the cylinder has an engraved scalloped band and an engraved leaf motif on the chambers. Engraved accents, which include borders, zig-zag line motifs and floral patterns, are also found on the barrel lug, frame and top strap. Fitted with a pinned round blade front sight, a raised notch on the barrel latch and pearl grips with "L.A.W" on top of the right panel. The barrel is marked with the two-line Springfield address and patent dates with the "REISSUE JULY 25. 1871" marking at the end of the standard patent date listing. The serial number is marked on the butt, rear cylinder face and barrel.
