Offered here is correspondence written in pencil from Civil War Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard to General Hardee. Dated "Corinth, May 1, 1862," this in the field correspondence reads, "Dear General, From information just received of the condition of the ground visited by Gen'l Breckinridge I think it would be advisable to delay the construction of the road crossing the bottom directly in front of your works until tomorrow A.M. I intend reconnoitering in that direction this afternoon. I will be in your quarters at 5-1/2 h P.M. - & would be happy to have you accompany me." The original signature initials of Beauregard are erased and replaced with his full signature ("G. T. Beauregard;" he rarely used his first name), and is followed by the name of the recipient, General Hardee. The letter continues, "P.S. Gen'l Cleburne can go on with his road." It is on a 7x7 1/2 inch sheet of lined paper. On the reverse is a summary done in ink. This lot also contains a portrait of General Beauregard from an engraving by H.B. Hall's Sons of New York. Beauregard ordered the first shots of the Civil War on April 12, 1861, at Fort Sumter and commanded armies in the Western Theater. This document was written during the Siege of Corinth (April 29 to May 30, 1862) that ended with Beauregard withdrawing his forces to Tupelo. His greatest achievements were saving the city of Petersburg, Virginia, and the Confederate capital of Richmond from assaults by overwhelmingly superior Union forces in June 1864. In April 1865, General Beauregard and General Joseph Johnston convinced President Davis that the war needed to end.

Fine. The writing is clear. A very nice Civil War field document written by one of the most import Confederate generals and references the most import Confederate leaders (Breckinridge, Hardee and Cleburne) in the Western Theater.
