Description:

The New Model No. 3 was introduced in 1878 and was an improved version of Smith & Wesson's popular top break design that had been in use for nearly a decade. Smith & Wesson revolvers were among the most popular revolvers in use by western lawmen, ranchers, and outlaws as well as trick shooters like Annie Oakley. Jessie James was supposedly assassinated by Bob Ford using a New Model No. 3. All New Model No. 3 frames were manufactured by 1898, but some were assembled and shipped as late as 1912. This example's early serial number suggests it was manufactured in the first year of production. It has the standard markings and features. It has the matching serial number "327" on the barrel latch, barrel, cylinder, grips, and butt. The grips are nicely figured walnut.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 60% plus of the original blue finish remains. Most of the loss is on the cylinder and grip frame. Those areas have smooth brown and gray patina. The cylinder has multiple drag lines. The casehardened small parts remain 40% intact with the balance having faded to smooth gray. The grips have only minor dings and scratches. It is mechanically excellent and has crisp markings.
