Description:

The included factory letter confirms the caliber, finish and shipment of 450 revolvers to the U.S. government on 8 March 1887. The barrel length and stocks are not listed, usually an indication of 7 1/2 inch barrel and walnut grip as found on this example. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line address, and the left side of the frame is marked with the three-line, three-patent dates followed by "US". There are small "D.F.C." sub-inspection stamps located on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame, and the side of the cylinder. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, and back strap, and the partial serial number "0491" on the underside of the barrel under the ejector housing and on the cylinder. The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "425". The frame and hammer are casehardened, and the remaining parts are blue. Fitted with a smooth one-piece walnut grip with "1887" over a cartouche on the left side and a boxed cartouche is on the right side.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The revolver has a smooth gray patina with 25% original blue finish remaining in and around the protected areas. The frame retains 20% of the original case colors which are most visible forward of the cylinder. The refinished grip is good showing a faint cartouche, high edge wear and some minor to moderate pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically functions, but the hammer notches are worn down.
