Description:

An estimated 100,000 Model 1861 rifle-muskets were manufactured by Colt before the end of the Civil War. When you consider Colt also manufactured over 200,000 revolvers during the war and suffered a factory fire and the fact that many contractors failed to supply a few thousand firearms throughout the war, this number is incredible. This "1862" dated (lock and barrel) example was manufactured under contract with the State of New Jersey for their state units and has the standard Colt markings, "N.J" on the left barrel flat at the breech and stock flat, no U.S. inspection marks, and has a trumpet head ramrod, standard blade front and three leaf rear sights, "U" marked barrel bands, "U.S" marked buttplate, and a "US" and "C&Co" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine as issued. The metal surfaces remain mostly armory bright with some light spotting and minor marks and scratches. The rear sight retains 85% of the original blued finish. The stock is also very fine and has strong original oil finish and only a few minor dings and scrapes consistent with handling and storage. The bayonet is near excellent and has some small spots of minor pitting and oxidation and a slightly aged patina. This is an exceptional example of the Colt Model 1861 Special Rifle-Musket.
