Description:

This pair is in absolutely astounding condition. They are nearly as they were when they left George Wilbraham's shop in London circa 1815-1830. They are marked "WILBRAHAM" on the engraved locks which have sliding half cock safeties, rainproof pans with gutters, rollers on the frizzens, and corresponding "humps" on the frizzen springs. The top of the Damascus pattern barrels is flat and marked "WILBRAHAM" in bold lettering followed by "LONDON" in fancy script. Small London proofs are on the bottom. Small post front sights are located near the muzzles. The breech plugs are casehardened and have engraving and platinum band and vent liners. The bottom of the barrels have swivel mounts for the iron ramrods. The breech tangs, hooked trigger guards, and butt caps are also engraved. The wedge escutcheons and thumb plates are plain silver. The stock are high grade walnut with fine checkering at the wrist. Their large bores, fixed sights, and secured ramrods would make these pistols suitable for a travelling gentleman. The smooth bores and fixed sights would have also made them suitable as duelling pistols , but single set triggers were preferred by many by the late Regency period. Wilbraham pistols are far less commonly seen than those by more prolific makers but tend to be very fine collector pieces. The pair comes in a hardwood case with blue velvet lined interior, bullet mold, oiler, combination powder flask and ball container, bore rod, and extra flints.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with only light handling and storage type marks throughout. It retains strong period brown finish and Damascus twist patterns on the barrel, 60% original blue finish on the trigger guard and cap, traces of blue on the ramrod pipes, and light case colors and brown/gray patina on the casehardened lock and breech. The silver has an attractive aged patina. The stock has crisp checkering and smooth oiled surfaces. It is mechanically excellent and has sharp markings. The case has mild storage wear on the exterior and compression marks, fading, stains, and some small holes and tears on the interior. The accessories are good.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. There are some handling and storage type marks and a few scratches and dings throughout. The barrel retains 90% plus of the period brown finish and Damascus patterns and has some minor spotting on the left side. The breech and lock have subdued original case colors. 60% of the original blue finish remains on the small parts with a gray patina on the balance. The silver has aged patina. The stock is also very fine and has some slight edge wear around the lock inlet, sharp checkering, minor pressure marks, and smooth oiled surfaces. It is mechanically excellent and has crisp markings throughout. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest sets of English flintlock pistols we have seen lately.
