Description:

Introduced prior to and popularized during the Revolutionary War, the "eagle head" sword was one of the signature weapons of the young United States through the War of 1812 and into the 1830s, with many volunteer and militia units continuing to use them well past that. 34 1/2 inches overall, with a 29 inch curved single fuller blade, which has a flat spine, a niter blue decorative panel on the lower half, and gold wash accented martial etching on both sides. The only marking is an etched "Warranted" on the right side just above the ricasso. The hilt is of brass construction, with an American eagle on both of the semi-circular languets, a "screaming eagle" style pommel, and a ribbed bone grip. The American eagles are standing beneath 18 stars; if the stars represent the States of the Union, this would suggest production between 1812 (admission of Louisiana) and 1816 (admission of Indiana) or later. The scabbard is brass construction, with a repeating laurel motif on the obverse face and an American eagle perched on a 15-star American shield between the suspension bands.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade shows 30% of the original niter blue, with mild spotting and a mixed gray patina on the upper half. The brass, especially the hilt, shows a deep antique color, with some age cracks in the grip. A few dents and scuffs are present on the scabbard.
