Description:

1) Ames Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword. Measuring 36 inches overall, the sword is fitted with a 30 1/2 inch double fuller blade, etched with American martial and patriotic themes on both sides, with the Ames Chicopee address on the right side above the ricasso. Engraved and pierced-through floral designs are present on the gilt brass guard, with laurel designs on the helmet pommel and a sharkskin grip with brass wire wrapping. 2) Klingenthal Production Non-Regulation American Foot Officer Sword with Ames Scabbard. Measuring 34 1/2 inches overall, the sword is fitted with a 28 inch double fuller quillback blade, with American patriotic and martial motifs etched on both sides of the blade, a pair of "crown/B" proofs on the right ricasso, and the maker's mark of the Coulaux Brothers of Klingenthal on the spine, indicating post-1830 production. The hilt is decorated with pierced and engraved floral designs, with a laurel wreath decorated pommel and braided wire wrapped sharkskin grip. The scabbard is black leather with gilt copper fittings, marked with the Ames Chicopee address on the throat.

Rating Definition:

1) Good overall. The blade shows some mild spotting and areas of gray patina, with strong etching and a generally bright appearance. The hilt has been lightly cleaned, with some traces of the gilt color and a well aged brass patina overall. The grip wrap has opened up a bit at the seam, but is otherwise good with some light rubbing. 2) Fair. The blade shows areas of brown patina, with mild spotting, some light pitting, a few dings on the edge and scattered handling marks. The hilt shows a mixed aged brass patina with a bit of play in the grip wire and mild handling marks. The scabbard is fair as repaired.
