Description:

This is a standard U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1903 rifle that has been modified into a WWI sniper style rifle with a Model 1913 Warner & Swasey Musket Sight. During WWI, the Model 1903 rifle fitted with the Model 1913 Warner & Swasey telescopic sight was the primary U.S. Army sniper rifle with approximately 4,000 manufactured between 1915-19. The receiver has the standard Springfield Armory markings over serial number "937700", and the barrel is dated "SA/2-18". The left side of the receiver is fitted with a blued reproduction W&S type scope mount secured with three new screws, and the side of the stock has been correctly inletted to accept the mounting bracket. The bolt is a late 1930s pattern with a single small gas-hole on the underside with the top of the handle stamped "NS". The rifle is fitted with a late pattern two-bolt "S" stock with grasping grooves on the sides that is stamped with a boxed "DAL" cartouche on the left side and a single, circled, non-script "P" proof in the pistol grip area. It has a post-WWI era handguard with the round windage cutout on the right side with the wide sighting groove on top. The rifle is fitted with the all milled components that includes a late WWII "R" marked front barrel band/bayonet lug. It is currently fitted with a reproduction 20 shot blued detachable box magazine with a stamped follower (also includes the original floorplate). The W&S telescopic sight is marked on the sides "TELESCOPIC MUSKET SIGHT/MODEL OF 1913 No.7551". The back side of the scope dovetail is marked: "FOR RIFLE NO. 937956". The top of the scope body has the correct brass drift and wind correction plate attached by four screws. The scope is fitted with a reproduction rubber eyepiece. The scope also comes with a WWI leather W&S leather storage case with its original shoulder strap. The case is marked on the lower rear edge "J.W.D." (the U.S. Ordnance inspector proof). The rifle is complete with an original WWI Model 1905 bayonet and leather scabbard. The bayonet is marked "SA/1918" and "US/925686". The lot also includes an original leather sling stamped "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/1908/T.C.C." and a reproduction field manual for the telescopic sight.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled with most of the late arsenal reparkerized finish overall with edge and high spot wear, and a darker reparkerized finish on the barrel bands. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition overall with a nice matching dark brown color, clear stock proofs and some sanding around the finger grooves. The scope retains 90% of its original black finish with somewhat clear optics with numerous small specs inside, typical of these early scopes. The leather scope case is also in very good condition with its nice original brown color overall with tight stitching and brass rivets. The bayonet retains 90% of its dark parkerized finish overall, and the leather scabbard is also in very fine condition with clear, distinct markings on the back side. The leather sling is in good condition. A representative example of a copy of a WWI 1903 sniper rifle with W&S scope.
