Description:

Manufactured on contract for the U.S. Military by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut between 1817 and 1820. The pistol has iron mountings with a double strap barrel band with brass front sight blade. The edges of the lock plate are beveled ahead of the hammer and rounded behind it. The lock has a detachable brass flash pan. The forend tip of the oil-finished, black walnut stock extends beyond the barrel band. The pistol is fitted with a replacement hickory ramrod with swelled tip; the ramrod lacks the threaded iron ferrule found on the end of original Model 1816 ramrods. The lock is undated and has the early markings with "S. NORTH" in an arc above an eagle and shield with "U" on one side and "S" on the other and "MIDLn CONN" in an upward arc below. No inspector marks above the touchhole. Only the "N" of North's name is visible. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "P/US" inspection marks. No cartouches or inspection marks are visible on the stock.

Rating Definition:

Fair. All metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with scattered overall minor pitting. The stock is fair with a minor 3/4" crack running from the upper side plate screw to the barrel, a moderate gouge in front of the lock plate and scattered minor dings, nicks and dents. Part of the lock plate marking is obscured by pitting. The action is tight.
