Description:

Manufactured in 1938. Beaded Integral blade ramp front sight with provisions for a hood, elevation adjustable rear sight, and tapped for sight/scope mounting ahead of the rear sight and on the type I receiver. It has the correct early 24 inch medium heavy barrel with the early caliber marking "375 MAGNUM" on the left side and two-line address on the right side. According to Roger Rule in his book "The Rifleman's Rifle: Winchester's Model 70, 1936-1963," (page 199-200) the 24 inch medium heavy barrel configuration was only in use until 1939, when it was phased out in favor of a 25 inch configuration. The Winchester factory proof is marked on the left side of the barrel and receiver at the breech. Equipped with a late safety, cloverleaf receiver tang, polished bolt (not numbered) and sling swivels. Mounted with a checkered pistol grip stock fitted with a solid recoil pad.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and receiver retains 95% plus original blue finish showing numerous fine scratches on the refinished floor plate, minor pitting on the receiver tang and minor spotting on the refinished trigger guard. There is extensive surface rust covering the buttstock sling swivel. The stock is fine as repaired (near the receiver tang) with some scattered minor handling marks and some areas of textured finish. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
