Description:

Almost twenty thousand of these breech loading rifles were made at Harpers Ferry Arsenal. Marked "J.H. HALL/H. FERRY/US/1834" on top of the breechblock. The sights were offset to the left to avoid the flintlock hammer, frizzen and pan which are set on top of the breechblock. This offset makes the bayonet for these rifles distinct. Since the front sight is offset, the cut in the bridge at the rear of the socket has to be offset, and the slot is made in the shape of the sight. The triangular blade is 16 inches long, and the fuller on the top flat is unstopped and only runs from the tip to the center of the blade. These rifles were finished in "National Armory Brown". This finish was somewhat fragile and was lacquered at the armory to prevent wear. The breech assembly was casehardened instead of browned, and the ramrod and bayonet were finished "National Armory bright".

Rating Definition:

Near excellent with 75% original lacquered brown worn at the muzzle from the bayonet and mixed with scattered freckles of surface rust. The casehardening on the breechblock have turned dark and there are some small dents at the front. The stock is excellent with sharp edges and only minor handling marks. The ramrod is bright. The bayonet has been cleaned and has a soft gray patina with light pitting and rust stains. Mechanically fine.
