Description:

The Type III Model 1795 was manufactured from 1808 to 1814. The lock plate is marked with the script "US" over a downward arched "SPRINGFIELD" in front of the hammer and "1811" behind the hammer. This predates the War of 1812 and likely saw use in the conflict. The script "US" is marked on the left stock flat at an upward angle. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "P/eagle head/V" and "U S". The heel of the buttplate is marked "1812". The trigger guard is the Type III with the rounded finials, flat faced hammer with beveled edge with a straight spur, frizzen with a straight toe and the frizzen spring has a spear point tip. It has an integral forged iron rounded flash pan. Bayonet lug mounted 1-1/2 inches from the muzzle on top of the barrel. The full straight grip stock has three barrel bands and the long flutes approximately half the length of the comb and steel buttplate. Iron ramrod with a button end. Complete with a 14 inch triangular socket bayonet marked "SC. US" on the top of the blade and "S" just ahead of the slot.

Rating Definition:

Good overall. All of the metal surfaces have a steel gray/brown patina with some pitting at the breech end of the barrel, lock plate, hammer, flash pan and frizzen. Mixed assembly numbers on the interior and exterior of the lock. The stock is good with repairs below the lock in front of the trigger guard and at the wrist. Overall scattered minor dents and scratches. The sling swivels are replacements. The bayonet has a crack in the bar at the end of the slot, and it has a dark aged patina with overall moderate pitting. Mechanically good.
