Description:

This rifle was manufactured in 1827 as part of a contract held by Henry Deringer of pocket pistol fame. He manufactured 13,000 of these rifles in multiple variations between 1817 and the early 1840s. Another 25,200 were manufactured by other contractors. These arms are among the first widely issued rifled firearms used by any military and are part of the U.S.'s long rifle history and some were used even during the Civil War. This model has been referred to as the "common rifle" since the actual period of use to differentiate it from the "uncommon" breech loading Hall rifle. This example has the standard fixed sights, all iron fittings aside from the brass flash pan, standard second type markings, and "1827" on the tail of the lock and barrel tang.

Rating Definition:

Poor. The barrel has been reamed out to .60 caliber smoothbore, and the lock was poorly reconverted back to Flintlock configuration with a crude replacement top jaw and jaw screw that are aged to match. The metal surfaces have an artificial dark gray and brown patina and mild-moderate pitting. There are also some vice marks on the barrel near the rear band. The wood is fine as re-oiled and has some chipping around the lock inlet, a repaired crack on the left flat, faint cartouche outline, and various dings and scratches. The lock functions fine, and the markings are mostly clear.
