Description:

This carbine has the locking action used on the Model 1871 rifles and carbines manufactured by Springfield Armory under a royalty agreement with Remington. However, the adjustable rear sight is different, and there are no "MODEL 1871" or date markings. The cartouche on the left side of the wrist ahead of the large "3SC" marking appears to be H.B. Hart's "HBH" stamp used around 1875. Similar "3SC" markings have been found on the grips of Colt Single Action Army revolvers known to have been issued to the Third Brigade Signal Corps. Discussion of the "3SC" markings is found on pages 136-140 of "Colt Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers" by Kopec and Fenn and similar markings are shown on Colt Single Action No. 140314. The Third Brigade was part of the New York Militia. Government records from the late 19th century note the New York militia were equipped with .50 caliber Remington rifles and carbines. Given Kopec and Fenn recorded just 5 Colt revolvers as issued to the Signal Corps, very few carbines were likely issued to them as well. The stock just ahead of the buttplate tang also has "39/20." The upper tang has "94" behind the Remington patent markings, and "146" is stamped by the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 85% of the lightly fading original blue finish and original case colors remain. There is some slight spotting and scattered minor marks. The wood is also very fine and has mild edge wear, some small dings and scratches consistent with handling and storage, and a few mild scrapes. Mechanically excellent, and the markings throughout are crisp.
