Description:

This carbine has a "SWP/1886" cartouche on the left side above the trigger and a script "P" in a circle behind the lower tang. Its serial number falls within the proper range for that year which is notable given both the Model 1884 experimental rod bayonet rifles and experimental long Model 1886 carbines were manufactured that same year. The former are generally found with this front sight cover. Aside from the front cover, the example has the standard markings and standard features of the Model 1884 carbine. An appraisal from James H. Cohen & Sons is included, and the cleaning tools are in the butt compartment.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The carbine has primarily mottled gray and brown patina throughout, strong blue finish on the sight cover, trace of original blue finish in protected areas, small patches of vibrant case colors on the breechblock, and some light oxidation/pitting. The stock is lightly sanded and re-oiled and has some minor scrapes and dings. The rear sight and barrel band are both replacements with numerous dings visible around base. The action functions fine.
