Description:

Manufactured in 1858. The Third Model Dragoon was the most common of the large Colt percussion revolvers and can be distinguished by its round trigger guard. The Third Model was also the first Colt revolver designed for a detachable shoulder stock. This revolver is equipped with brass blade front and two leaf rear and hammer notch sights, an iron back strap, and brass trigger guard. The recoil shield and butt are cut for a shoulder stock. The top of the barrel is marked "ADRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY" partially covered by the rear leaf sight. The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." The cylinder is roll engraved with the Federal/Indian battle as well as the serial number and "MODEL U.S.M.R." and "COLTS PATENT" in panels above and below the serial number. The complete matching serial number "17214" is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial number "7214" is marked on the loading lever. The wedge is very tight, and the writer did not want to force it out to check the numbers on the wedge and cylinder pin. The upper left front of the trigger guard bow is marked with a "1" and there are single letter inspection marks on some of the various parts. The revolver is fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip with a faint cartouche on the left side.

Rating Definition:

Good as partially refinished and assembled with a renumbered barrel assembly. The metal surfaces have an artificial smooth brownish and gray patina with some minor pitting on the face of the cylinder and on the rear of the barrel lugs. There are light file marks present under the finish. There are a few scattered minor dings. The cylinder scene and markings are clear. The trigger guard has an aged patina with a few minor dings on the front strap. The grips are very good with a small chip on the left toe, some lower edge wear, minor handling marks, and a pleasant hand rubbed patina. The barrel and frame markings are clear. The action is good. Formerly from the Will Hoffeld collection.
