Description:

This early 19th century Berks County school rifle has components that resemble other rifles from Berks County such as similar patch box finials and trigger guards and the Roman nose stock profile. There are subtle cross and star designs on the barrel of this example, but no signature was found. The lock is marked "W. KETLAND & Co." below the pan and has a simple floral motif at the tail. The stock has a slender, fairly round wrist, an oval plate on the comb, a downturned moon inlay on the shallow cheekpiece, and incised scroll carving on the left side of the butt. The side plate is engraved with simple patterns. There are spire style points that are similar to the patch box finial on the toe plate and the piece behind the trigger guard. The rifle has standard blade and notch sights and a plain trigger.

Rating Definition:

Fair as converted back to flintlock configuration using a period lock. The barrel has deep brown tone and was bored smooth in period, possibly after the rifling became worn. The lock displays gray patina with some spotting and mild pitting. The brass has honest aged patina. The rear two barrel pins are absent, but the front pin and tang bolt have the barrel secure. The stock has some cracking and slivers absent on the front sections of the forend, very small cracks at the nose of the lock, some minor chips and light scratches, a carefully executed repair of a crack that extended from the rear of the trigger guard through the comb just ahead of the buttplate, and a splice at the toe. The lock needs work.
