This is an example of a Third Model 1876 that was manufactured in 1885. This Deluxe Sporting Rifle features a full 28 inch octagon barrel, single set trigger, brass blade front and folding ladder rear sights. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address/King's Improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight and "40-60 W.C.F." at the breech. The left side of the lower tang is marked "2690 XXX", indicating the special order and the grade of the wood. The number is repeated on the stock in the upper tang slot and on the toe of the buttplate. The bottom of the cartridge elevator is marked "40-60". The upper tang has "MODEL 1876" and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The barrel and magazine tube are blue, with casehardened remaining parts and mounted with checkered deluxe walnut forearm with steel end cap and pistol grip stock with a horn grip insert and crescent buttplate with compartment containing an original 4 piece cleaning rod.

Very good as partially refinished with 95% current high polish blue finish remaining on the barrel and magazine tube. The underside of the magazine tube and the left barrel flat show a number of small minor scratches and there is some light edge wear on the barrel. The receiver retains 40% vivid case colors. The hammer retains 60% case colors and the lever has a smooth mottled brown patina with hints of case colors in protected areas. The revarnished wood is fine with a small area of varnish crazing behind the pistol grip on the left side, minor handling marks and crisp re-cut checkering. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine.
