Manufactured in 1891. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office letter that describes it as: Rifle, Caliber 40/82, with round barrel and plain trigger. The rifle has a 26 inch round barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn sporting style rear sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The barrel, magazine, bolt, loading gate, and trigger are blued, and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are American walnut with a slight curl and varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. US.A-" with arrows at the end of each line. The caliber "40-82 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-." The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang immediately behind the trigger, and the serial number "54662" is stamped in script numerals between the rear tang screws.

Fine. 70% of the original blue finish remains on the barrel with some edge wear and a few scratches at the muzzle. The barrel legend and caliber markings are crisp. The magazine shows slightly more wear with some finish loss and several spots of light pitting near the magazine cap and some scattered spots of age discoloration and a few insignificant spots of pitting along the bottom. The bolt, loading gate, and trigger retain more than 90% of the blue finish. The forearm cap, sides and top of the receiver, trigger, and sides of the lever have 50% original case colors. The case colors on contact points on the bottom of the receiver and lever have aged to a smooth, silver gray patina. The casehardened finish on the buttplate shows slightly more wear and has faded to a smooth silver gray with faint traces of case colors. The stock and forearm have been re-oiled but remain in fine condition and show minimal handling wear. This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with desirable casehardened receiver.
