Description:

This rifle is marked "J MEDBERY" on top at the breech and has an engraved H. W. Delavan & Co. lock with high fence secured by a single screw. The rifle was built by Joseph Medbery (1797-1882) in Rochester, New York, around 1840. He was a gunsmith as well as a dealer in jewelry and military goods and later a real estate broker. His father, also Joseph Medbery, was an officer in Rhode Island during the Revolution. H. W. Delavan & Co. were hardware merchants in New York starting in the 1820s. The rifle has a heavy octagon barrel equipped with a small post front sight on a wide base and notch mid sight (elevator absent), and a "lollipop" style peep sight. The barrel is secured by three wedges with silver escutcheons. It has a plain brass trigger. The patch box has a domed lid and one-piece trim with six piercings. A silver initial plate is on the wrist, and a hunter's star is on the cheek piece.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with brown and gray patina on the barrel and lock along with some moderate oxidation and pitting (primarily at the breech). The brass and silver have attractive aged patina. The stock is fine with minor dings and scratches, nice figure, and the common tension crack at the lock screw. The lock is mechanically fine, but the trigger sticks due to verdigris build up.
