Description:

Factory double cased Colt Model 1860 Army revolvers manufactured in 1869. These revolvers are fitted with period, dove-tail mounted front and rear sights. The front sights have a tapered, German silver blades and the buckhorn style rear sights are mounted on the breech with faceted bases. The revolvers are accompanied by a letter by Colt expert R.L. Wilson. The letter notes a few Colt Model 1860 Army revolvers were fitted with factory barrel mounted rear sights and states that "the workmanship on the rear and front sights is clearly that of the Colt factory". The hammers have the late, bordered knurling on the spurs. The revolvers have the Colt high polish blue finish on the barrels, cylinders and back straps with fiery case colors on the loading levers, frames and hammers. The brass trigger guards are silver plated. The one-piece walnut grips have a varnished piano finish. The rear sights, screws and triggers have a fire blue finish. The barrels are roll-stamped with the legend: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.AMERICA -" with the last two letters of "AMERICA" covered by the rear sight dovetails. "COLTS PATENT" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of each frame. The forward portion of the rebated cylinders is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene. "COLTS PATENT". "44 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of each trigger guard. The full serial number of Revolver A, "181267", is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "267" is stamped on the cylinder. Revolver B has the full serial number,"181292", on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap and the partial serial number "292" stamped on the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers on both revolvers match. The revolvers are contained in a mahogany, American style case with seven compartments lined with brown velvet. The case contains a full set of accessories which include: (1) two 250 count tins of Eley percussion caps for "Colt's PT. Repeating Holster Pistols" in the original brown paper wrappings, (2) American Flask & Cap Co. "Coat of Arms" pattern powder flask with fixed charger and brown lacquer body ( #F30, page 176 of "Colt Percussion Accouterments", by Robin J. Rapley), (3) double cavity, bow-leg, blued steel bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter and "44H" on the right block, (4) unmarked pewter oil bottle, (5) niter blue, L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, and (6) four conical lead bullets.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 95% of the original high polish blue finish on the barrel. Wear is limited to a few small dents surrounding the wedge slot and some discoloration at the muzzle. The blue has thinned slightly on the back strap but retains about 90% of the finish. The blue on the cylinder scene and the portions of the cylinder surrounding the nipples has flaked; the cylinder retains 50% of the high polish blue and nearly all of the naval scene. All of the cylinder safety pins remain. The percussion nipples and sides of the hammer show traces of light flash pitting. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain at least 95% of the vivid case colors. The brass trigger guard has about 50% of the delicate silver plating remaining in protected areas. The walnut grip retains about 90% of the original piano finish and is in very fine condition with a small chip on the left heel and a number of minor dents in the butt. The rear sight, trigger and screws have most of the fire blue finish, and the screw heads remain in excellent condition. The case is in good overall condition. The lid has minor scratches and handling marks with no cracks or repairs. The brown velvet lining has faded and shows the usual compression marks from contact with the revolvers. The fabric on the edges of the case is slightly torn in several places from contact with the revolvers' front sights, rear sights and hammer spurs. The accessories remain in very fine to excellent condition. Both the cap tins are sealed and remain in very good condition. The powder flask is very fine with 90% of the brown lacquer finish on the body and most of the gold plated and fire blue finish on the top. The bullet mold is very fine with 80% of the original blue finish remaining. The screwdriver/nipple wrench has nearly all of the fire blue finish and the pewter oil bottle is in very fine-excellent condition

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 97% original high polish blue finish on the barrel. The back strap shows a little more handling and retains 60% plus original blue finish. The cylinder retains about 70% of the blue and all of the cylinder scene. The cylinder safety pins are in excellent condition, and the percussion nipples show only traces of flash pitting. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain close to 95% of the vivid case colors. The trigger guard has 60% or more of the silver plated finish. The rear sight, screw heads and trigger have substantial amounts of the fire blue finish. The grip remains in very fine condition with 90% or more of the piano finish; wear is limited to a few insignificant handling marks on the sides of the grip and a few minor dents on the butt. This is a magnificent pair of factory cased, late production, Colt Model 1860 Army revolvers with rarely encountered custom front and rear sights. This exceptional pair of revolvers would be the centerpiece of the finest collection of Colt firearms.
