Description:

This lot consists of a double cased set of engraved Colt Model 1860 Army revolvers that were manufactured in 1863. Both revolvers have a silver plated finish. The revolvers feature American style scroll engraving on a punch dot background and are fitted with raised relief carved checkered grips. The one piece grips are finely checkered and have a highly detailed relief carved American Eagle and Shield motif on the left sides. The barrels are roll stamped with the Colt New York address. "COLT'S/PATENT" is stamped on the left side of the frames surrounded by oval engraved panels. The serial numbers are stamped on the barrel lugs, frames, trigger guards, and back straps. The are no Colt markings on the cylinders. The letter "P" is stamped above or below the serial number on the barrel lugs, frames, trigger guards, and back straps. This marking was used by Colt to designate components intended for engraving or special finish. Although the engraving style is similar to that utilized by Colt factory engravers during this same period, the scroll engraving, lack of Colt markings on the cylinders, border work and other details indicate that the engraving was executed by Louis D. Nimschke. In addition, the letter "N", which is almost certainly Nimschke's signature, is engraved on the top of the barrel at the breech end of the Colt address. The distinctive French fitted ebonized case has mother of pearl and brass mounts. The inside of the case lid has the maker's label: "H. FOLSOM & CO.,/ST. CHARLES ST./NEW ORLEANS". A Nimschke engraved Colt Model 1862 Police revolver with a similar case, nearly identical finish, and relief carved attributed to New York dealers Schuyler, Hartley & Graham is illustrated on page 329 of "THE COLT ENGRAVING BOOK, VOLUME ONE" by R.L. Wilson. The case is lined with blue velvet and contains: silver plated powder flask with fixed charger, silver plated double cavity bullet mold marked "COLTS/PATENT" on the sprue cutter, silver plated oil bottle, silver plated L-shaped screwdriver/nipple wrench, 100 cap tin of American Flask & Cap percussion caps, and case key.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver is retains 80% of the period replated silver finish. The plating has scattered flaking on the back straps, cylinders, and levers. The beautifully executed American style scrollwork is crisp. The highly detailed relief carved grips are fine overall with a few hairline age cracks at the heel and a very attractive cream colored patina. The case exterior is in very good overall. The interior is good with some finish loss on the velvet lining on the edges of the compartments but no serious wear. The replated powder flask, bullet mold, and other accessories are very good.
