Description:

These revolvers were manufactured from 1853 to 1857 and serial numbered in their own range (1-11000) with this example having been manufactured in 1854. The muzzle and breech end of the barrel, frame, loading lever, back strap and trigger guard are engraved with a floral scroll design. The cylinder is roll engraved with the stagecoach hold up scene and marked "COLTS PATENT/No 4146.". The left side of the barrel lug is marked with a "crown/V" and "crown/GP" proofmarks. The proofmarks are repeated on the cylinder alternating between each nipple recess. The top barrel flat is marked "{ADDRESS.COL:COLT/LONDON.}", and the left side of the frame is marked "Colts Patent" in a banner. There is a punch dot below the serial number on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap, which designates special finish or engraving at the factory. A similar example is documented in R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Colt Engraving" on page 130. Matching numbers appear on the barrel, frame, grip straps, cylinder, loading lever, wedge and cylinder pin. Fitted with a nicely figured one-piece grip. Formerly of the Lewis Hutchinson Collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period replated. The revolver retains 80% of the silver plating with the balance a smooth dark brown patina and showing some blistering. The revarnished undersize grip is also very good with a few minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
