This Flintlock pistol was manufactured by Louis Lamotte of St. Etienne (1747-1791) most likely for the Mediterranean trade. The front of the relief chiseled lock plate is signed "Louis/Lamotte" in gold. The remainder of the lock plate is covered with exquisite high relief chiseled military and floral motifs accented with gold in the negative space that excites admiration. Note that the base of the cock is enclosed in the lock. Accents in gold adorn the pan and artfully sculpted cock. The serrated frizzen has chiseled work depicting a cannon ball chased by flames being fired out of a cannon. Again, gold fills in the negative space. The military and floral chiseled embellishment extends to the rear half of the barrel and barrel tang. The military motif is a mix of flags, cannons, shields, wreaths and drums. A suit of armor appears on the barrel. Ahead of the chiseled work on the barrel is a series of bands accented with gold followed by a 2 inch wedge of gold floral work. Near the muzzle is a large gold filled star burst. The cannon-style muzzle is in silver. The furniture is silver and feature high relief chiseled motifs. Military imagery is repeated on the side plate. The ramrod finial, trigger guard and pommel feature classical imagery in relief. The trigger guard finial depicts an eagle sitting overlooking a grouping of arms. Hallmarks appear on the trigger guard and side plate. The full length ebony stock features large silver inlays which repeat the floral and military patterns. The leather bound case holds a ramrod, screwdriver, hammer, silver ladle with detachable wooden handle, bullet mold, double face silver powder flask and engraved vise.

Very good as extensively restored. The pistol has a dark mottled artificial brown patina. The silver is fine. Most of the gold remains. The replacement stock is fine with a long crack on the forearm (left side), a repaired chip near the barrel tang and filler around the grip inlays and pommel. Mechanically excellent. The custom made case is very good showing minor wear to the leather and some high spot wear to the lining.
