Description:

The Damascus barrel has "I. CHRISTOPH KUCHENREITER" and scroll designs inlaid in niello, a small proofmark, a golden hallmark with a man on horseback over "ICK," a dovetailed blade front sight, vent liner with two holes (only the bottom goes all the way through), and notch rear sight with three leaves. "I" was used in place of "J" in many parts of Europe in old script. The barrel tang is numbered "2" indicating the pistol was part of a pair. The pistol has a single set trigger and deep relief engraved furniture with deer, cherub, dog, and floral designs. The full length stock has attractive Baroque style raise relief carving and a horn forend cap. Johan Christoph Kuchenreiter (1670-1743) in southeastern Germany (then part of the Holy Roman Empire) is particularly known for his pistols, many of which have very similar barrel inlays and engraving.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The vent liner is likely a later addition. The iron has gray patina and minor edge wear. There are some fresh strike marks on the frizzen. The brass has aged patina. The stock has some repairs near the muzzle and light scratches and pressure marks throughout. The engraving patterns, inlays, and carving are distinct throughout. The lock is mechanically fine, but the set trigger needs some adjustments.
