Description:

William Beckwith and then his son Henry operated in England from the early 19th century until 1868. The round Damascus barrel has a flat top, rifled bore, a bead front sight, two leaf rear sight (one fixed and one folding), "BECKWITH LONDON" on a gold inlaid scroll on top, "1751" on the bottom near the breech and the breech plug hook, and British proofs on the bottom of the gold banded breech plug. "BECKWITH" is signed on the gold inlaid banner on the lock which was originally an advanced flintlock with gutters, rainproof pan, frizzen spring roller, sliding safety, and floral scroll engraving. It has been fitted with a percussion hammer in place of the cock, and an arm in place of the frizzen with a percussion nipple and flash channel that fits within the pan and aligns with the original platinum vent liner. It would have been possible to convert the rifle back and forth from flint to percussion via only changing two parts. The wedge escutcheons, ramrod pipes, and nose cap have border engraving, and the remaining furniture is primarily cast silver with raised relief martial and floral designs. A series of silversmith hallmarks are on the trigger guard. The buttplate has a hinged door on the rear, and the stock has corresponding slots for absent tools. The ramrod is affixed via a swivel which would have helped retain control of the rod while loading on horseback. Iron sling swivels are mounted to the pistol grip stock which has checkering at the wrist and signs of long absent wire inlaid scrollwork.

Rating Definition:

Fair with dark patina and oxidation along the visible surfaces of the barrel and lock, bright surfaces on the underside of the barrel and lock, 90% plus original gold inlay, faint Damascus patterns on top and distinct patterns in the protected areas, cold blue on the hammer which has a broken spur, and dark aged patina on most of the silver. The stock is also fair and has a crack and minor chipping at the tail of the lock, smoothed checkering, absent wire inlay, chipping at the toe, some dark lacquer and dings on the butt, a sliver absent above the ramrod entry pipe on the right, and a crack on the left side ahead of the rear wedge. Mechanically fine.
