Description:

Flasks of this style were most popular in the Germanic states but were also used in Scandinavia and elsewhere. This powder flask is fashioned from a large piece of antler and has scrimshawed scenes with a pair of hunters under a shade tree on each side. The two men on one side are having a drink, and the seated figure has a hunting sword. On the other side, another set of men are talking. The standing man is touching the other's head and holds a jaeger rifle. The other man is seated holding his top hat and book. The bottom of the antler has two antler plugs, and the top has a horn cap, spout, and a plug with a vent pick. The inclusion of the pick for use with a flintlock, and the men's attire suggest the piece was made in the early 19th century.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. There are a few small pins absent, but all the pieces remain well fitted. There is otherwise only minor handling and storage marks overall.
