Description:

This is a very rare example of a Mauser Nickl patent prototype semi-automatic pistol chambered in 11.25 mm (45 ACP). This early prototype or experimental pistol uses the "Nickl" patented rotating, locked breech barrel design. This early design was short lived with a very few examples produced in 9 mm Luger with almost no examples produced in 45 ACP. This model was produced circa 1908-12 and predated the later Model 1915 pistol. The pistol itself is totally void of factory markings or serial number; however, the back of the magazine is stamped with serial number "3", clearly indicating that this is an early prototype. It has some unique features such as an internal hammer with an exposed extractor on the right side of the slide and a loaded chamber indicator on the rear of the slide. On the very front of the trigger guard bow is a very early simple takedown latch like the early 1910 Mauser design that has a single lug that fits up on the underside of the barrel. It also has a front barrel bushing similar to the early CZ 24 and 27 pistols. It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips and comes with an original magazine. An example of this unique pistol is shown on page 334 of the book "Handguns of the World" by Dr. Ezell, and a similar designed/shaped pistol is shown on page 269 of the book "System Mauser" by Breathed and Schroeder. Note: this later example is marked "1915" on the slide, and it has an exposed hammer design.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 95% of an old non-factory type refurbished blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear and thinning on the sides of the slide and upper side of the frame. The refinished walnut grips are in good condition with recut checkering on both sides showing no handling marks and a repaired crack visible on the left rear side. The wood has not been sanded, just cleaned, repaired, and reoiled. Mechanically fine.
