Description:

This is an attractive example of an early and complete Ludwig Loewe & Co. Model 1893 Borchardt pistol that includes a full complement of accessories including four matching magazines, a matching numbered dummy magazine, a matching numbered reproduction shoulder stock and cheekpiece, black leather holster and other accessories all stored in a small custom carrying case. The chamber area of the barrel extension is marked in three lines: "WAFFENFABRIK/LOEWE/BERLIN," and the right side of the receiver is marked "SYSTEM BORCHARDT PATENT." The top of the toggle link is stamped "N.R.P./No. 75837". The pistol serial number "521" is visible on the stock lug, the bottom of the pistol grip, the left side of the trigger, the left side of the toggle link, the rear underside of the barrel, the back side of both grip panels, the side of the stock and on the base of all four magazines and the back side of the dummy magazine. The spine of the dummy magazine is stamped "GESETZLICH GESCHUTZT". The left side of the barrel has the standard "Crown" over "B", "U", and "G" proofs while the left front edge of the barrel extension, the left side of the breechblock and toggle assembly have the standard "Crown" over the "B" and "U" acceptance proofs. The front sight on the barrel has been replaced with a contemporary very wide front sight blade, and the rear sight leaf has also been correspondingly modified (machined) with a wider slot and slightly lower blade. As noted, this is a complete Borchardt cased set with (1) four matching, nickel-plated, wooden base magazines (one in the pistol and three spares), (2) a wooden dummy magazine with the brass oiler on the bottom, (3) detachable wooden stock with cheekpiece, (4) black leather holster attached to the stock, (5) black leather sling, 6) brass cleaning rod, (7) detachable screwdriver blades, (8) wooden handle for cleaning rod and screwdrivers, (9) two steel punches, (10) round silver plated, brass oil can (11) a early small tin of Vaseline (lubrication) that is marked as made by the Carl Abermann & Co. of Frankfurt. The period, custom made small luggage-type case is covered with black leather and has a nickel plated oval name plate in the center of the lid and nickel-plated fittings. The case interior is lined with green velvet and divided into eight compartments.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% of the blue finish on the pistol overall, minor edge and high spot wear, and thinning around the edges of the front sight band and the rear of the frame on the frame lug and edges of the frame where a stock was attached. The smaller parts retain 98% of their refinished heat blued finish overall. The grips are also in very fine condition with nice, distinct checkering on both sides and only minor handling marks around the edges. As noted, it comes with a refinished shoulder stock that has been numbered to match the pistol, which shows only a couple very minor handling marks with a nice slightly reddish color. The refinished attaching iron shows thinning blue finish overall. The dummy wooden magazine has been restamped on the spine to match the pistol. The black leather holster and attaching straps are current reproductions that correctly match the originals. The various other accessories are all in excellent condition.
