Description:

This is a fine example of an early WWII G41(M) rifle as manufactured in 1942. This was an early German armaments attempt to develop and produce a semi-automatic rifle. Two firms competed to do this Walther and Mauser with the Mauser design being a complicated, conventional bolt action/semi-automatic design that used a modified "Bang" gas trap system. In the semi-automatic mode the bolt served as a charging handle, chambering the first round and cocking the striker, but in event of a gas system failure the operator could continue to fire the weapon like a conventional bolt action rifle. This was a complicated rifle to produce and it lost out the Walther design, which used the standard G41/43 gas port system. The Mauser design was only produced for a couple years before the German Armaments ministry completely switched over the Walther G41 and later G/K43 systems. The top of the receiver is stamped "G41(M)/1942" with the standard Mauser "Eagle/135" Waffenamt proof on various parts and components. The barrel is fitted with a standard blade front sight with a sheet metal sight cover with a tangent rear sight graduated "1-12". It is fitted with a standard pistol grip walnut stock, a short mid-length walnut handguard and a cupped steel buttplate. The side and pistol grip area of the stock has the standard "Eagle/135" Waffenamt proof. There are matching serial numbers present on the visible parts overall. This example is complete with a post war reproduction brown leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% plus of the original blue finish remaining mostly in the protected areas with the exposed metal surfaces having a thin, brown patina finish. The refinished stock and handguard are both in very good condition with a nice medium brown color overall showing minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the sides. A scarce example of an early WWII German military semi-automatic rifle.
