Description:

This is an example of a late production Model 1893 Borchardt pistol that was produced by the DWM factory. These are highly desirable and not encountered near as often as the Loewe produced example and are the direct predecessor to the DWM 1899/1900 Luger. Originally these pistols were marketed under the name WAFFENFABRIK/LOEWE/BERLIN however sometime in approximately 1895 that company merged with the Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik of Karlsruhe forming the new company of DWM. Consequently this is a later model, manufactured by DWM, same company that later produced the German Luger pistol during WWI. It has many of the late production features such as: a blank chamber area, fixed integral rear sight, one-piece, integral front sight blade with the more pointed blade, larger serial numbers on the frame and magazine, improved dovetailed sear leaf spring with the toggle marked with only, "D.R.P./No. 75837". The right side of the barrel extension is marked: "SYSTEM BORCHARDT PATENT/DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND-MUNITIONSFABRIKEN./BERLIN.". It is correctly serial numbered "1723" on the bottom of the pistol grip, the left side of the trigger, the left side of the rear toggle, the rear underside of the barrel, and the wooden base of the magazine. The left side of the barrel has the standard Crown over B, U and G proofs, while the left front edge of the barrel extension, the left side of the breechblock and toggle assembly have the standard Crown over the "B" and "U" acceptance proofs. It has a set of unnumbered checkered walnut grips. Consignor notes that this example was manufactured without a stock lug and that it was intended for sale in France. This example is complete with a modern brown leather commercial holster intended for use on a belt which is spuriously marked on the back belt loop, "C93/LL&Co./BERLIN".

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally restored with 98% of the current blue finish still remaining overall with clear distinct markings and proofs. The various smaller parts are all heat blued. The walnut grips are in very fine condition with nice distinct, sharp checkering overall with 90% of the varnish still remaining with only minor handling marks on the edges. The modern made holster is in good condition with clear distinct makers marks, with tight stitching showing minor wear and scuffing of the leather.
