Description:

Manufactured in the early 20th century. This "Von Schnatle Martini" has a barrel marked with "G. STEINBRENNER FREIBURG I/E" (top), "PRIMA" (upper right), "GUSS-STAHL" (upper left), and the serial number and proofs. Additional German proofs and the matching serial number are on the receiver. The partial serial number "097" is handwritten in the upper tang inlet. Aside from the barrel, the components have over 75% coverage German floral scrollwork engraving with punch dot backgrounds. Winged post front sight with ramped base, flanged rear section of the barrel for scope and sight mounting, peep sight fitted into the integral base on the receiver with large aperture disk, double set trigger group, sling swivels, forearm with carved leaf accents, and Tyrolean buttstock with checkering, leaf carving, thumb rest, and single hook buttplate. Notes included by the consignor indicate the barrel was has been match grade re-rifled to .321 by MATCO.

Rating Definition:

Fine as altered. The barrel retains 60% of the original blue finish with some areas starting to fade to brown patina. The buttplate has a dark brown and gray patina. The rear sight and upper tang have the strongest remnants of original case colors. There are traces of colors throughout the remaining components, but their surfaces mostly display silver-gray patina. The wood is fine with primarily distinct carving and checkering, chips and minor cracks at the tail of the forearm. An age crack in the right side of the comb, and minor scratches and dings. The action functions fine, and the engraving and markings are crisp throughout.
