Description:

Measuring 36 1/2 inches overall, with a 25 1/2 inch blade showing a very straight hamon fitted into a copper finished habaki, lightly engraved round iron brass tsuba, and two copper spacers. The fuchi and kashira are blackened copper with gilt accent floral designs, with a set of floral menuki. A plain black saya (no furniture) is included. Extensive markings are present on the tang, with a five-pointed Army acceptance star, 9-symbol signature and 3 white paint symbols on the right, two small stamps on the spine and a 6-symbol signature and 3 white paint symbols on the left. Notes from the consignor attribute the signature to a Hizen-school smith operating out of Nagasaki during the final year of the war and further attribute the weapon as having been captured in the vicinity of Shuri Ridge on Okinawa. One of the main nerve centers for the Japanese forces on the island, Shuri (and particularly Shuri Castle) was subject to heavy air and naval bombardment and was captured by American ground forces only after fighting their way through multiple layers of natural obstacles and military fortifications, with casualties on both sides in the thousands.

Rating Definition:

The blade is fine with a slight chip at the tip, a solid hamon, fine grain, and some minor spotting and handling marks overall. The tang shows a rough, unpolished finish with browning of the steel appropriate to age. The fittings are good with some spacers absent from the grip, a few dings and scuffs on the saya and mild handling marks overall.
