Finish: parkerize

Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 181
Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun
Description:

This is a good example of a late WWI Springfield Armory Model 1903 bolt action service rifle that was rebuilt during WWII. The receiver is an early double heat treated model, which was a dramatic improvement over the original casehardened receiver. It has the standard four line Springfield Armory markings over the serial number and it has been fitted with a late WWII High Standard replacement barrel. The barrel is marked "HS/7-44". It is fitted with a WWI type, straight grip, "S" stock with finger grooves on the sides. It has various subinspector markings in front of the trigger guard and double "P" proofs on the grip area. It has the WWI type milled barrel bands and a 1903A3 stamped trigger guard. It is fitted with the standard blade front sight and tangent rear sight. It is fitted with a WWII Remington 1903A3 blue bolt. It comes with a WWI type leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Very good as arsenal refurbished with 90% of the gray/green finish on the receiver and a darker gray finish on the barrel. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition with a nice dark matching color overall showing numerous handling marks and pressure dents on the sides and some heavier gouges on the underside of the forend. The sling is in good condition. The first half inch of the barrel (in front of the front sight base) has been cutoff and it has been professionally recrowned.

Manufactured in 1942. The barrel is marked "R.A./flaming bomb/12-42". Fitted with a standard blade front and late style stamped adjustable rear sights, stamped trigger guard, unmarked stamped barrel bands and standard markings on the receiver ring. The stock is the straight grip "scant" style without grasping grooves. The right side of the buttstock is marked "1667", and the left is marked with a partial boxed "FJA" inspection cartouche over an Augusta Arsenal "AAO" rebuild stamp and a boxed Rock Island Arsenal "RIA/EB" cartouche. The butt is fitted with a flat, checkered steel buttplate with a trapdoor. Includes a green canvas web sling.

Rating Definition:

Very good as arsenal refurbished. 97% of the gray phosphate finish remains with some small handling marks, light edge wear, and light surface scratches on the barrel bands. The wood is very good with small pressure indentations, dings, deep oil finish, and handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
