Manufactured in the mid to late 1960s, the 40X was the standard small bore competition rifle for the United States Army. The heavyweight barrel is fitted with front and rear dovetail blocks, with an additional block on the rear receiver ring, a rail for a peep sight on the left rear of the receiver, and a set of drilled and tapped holes for another block on the front ring. Currently, the rifle is equipped with a Bausch & Lomb Balvar 24 6-24x scope in a set of adjustable rings, with no fixed sights mounted or included. Smooth pistol grip stock with a pair of barrel tension screws and an accessory rail on the forearm, fixed rear sling swivel, and a Mershon "White Line" recoil pad.

Excellent with 90% of the original blue finish, showing some mild handling and edge wear overall. The bolt handle shows a plum tone, and the underside of the body is hand numbered to a different rifle. The stock is very good, with some scuffs and dents. Mild spotting is present on the otherwise clear optics, with the adjustment rings stiff and spotted. Mechanically excellent.
