Description:

This is a fine example of an early production Colt "old style" New Service Revolver manufactured in 1907 which has been New York engraved in a leaf and scroll pattern and geometric designs. The Colt factory letter that accompanies the pistol is dated Oct 1996 and shows that this gun was one of 14 pistols that were shipped to M. Hartley Company in New York, who was a supplier of pistols to the engraving shop of Helfricht, but does not list this exact pistol as being engraved. However, in looking at the engraving pattern and style, it is our opinion that this gun was engraved for M. Hartley in one of the New York shops. The engraving covers approximately 50% (B Coverage) of the pistol, on both side plates, the cylinder (in between the flutes) both sides of the barrel. The geometric designs are on the top strap, the back strap, the underside of the trigger guard and the sides of the lower frame area. The letter lists the caliber as 44/C, the finish as blue, the barrel length as a 4 1/2 inch and the grips are not listed. Currently, the pistol has an old nickel-plated finish and niter blue trigger, screws and top of hammer. It is fitted with smooth mother of pearl grips that are unmarked on the backs. The top of the barrel has the first pattern, two-line Hartford address and patent marking with 1884 and 1900 dates. The left side of the barrel has the one-line model and caliber marking: "NEW SERVICE CAL .44," and the underside of the barrel is correctly marked "44" in front of the cylinder. The Rampant Colt trademark is located on the side plate behind the cylinder latch and is encircled with "COLT/NEW SERVICE" separated by two Maltese crosses. The Colt "VP" triangle proofmark is located on the left front trigger guard bow, and the assembler's number "3" is located on the rear trigger guard bow. The serial number is located on the inside of the frame and the crane.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 80% of the nickel plated finish remaining with wear and thinning on the grip straps, the sides of the cylinder, the front and under side of the barrel and some of the general high spots overall. The grips are in excellent condition with just one small nick or chip area on the lower right rear corner of the grip. A very nice, early engraved Colt New Service revolver. Formerly from the Bill Powell Estate.
